either/or is a more relational album
this is just about him, which is fine but I like the other approach more

thats definitely fair, I actually prefer his two first because he does an absolutely flawless job of displaying his depression and anger, and his lyrics on his first two are truly spectacular. I love the production of each album as well.

I still need to hear his debut.

oh wow you haven't? An even more self loathing and dark album then this one. There were very few missteps for me on Roman Candle, but any misstep is rectified on this album, its his perfect record. Roman Candle isn't far from it though, and definitely has some of his best songs. And the production is awesome.

i don't like the idea of calling anything elliott's recorded as 'self-loathing and dark.' i mean sure it might be accurate but that's not the feeling i get from any of his stuff, even the first two albums are much more cathartic for me

lol if you don't get a depressed, dark and self-hating vibe from his first two you need to hear it again. I mean No Name #1 pretty much sums my whole argument up lol

I don't like this being called dark either. Being depressed and in touch with reality is much different than being dark. And I think it's also a misconception to think all depressed people are self-hating. It's more of a feeling of worthlessness that comes and goes but isn't persistent all of the time.

you're not totally grasping what i'm saying-- obviously no name #1 is an extremely self-deprecatory song, but it's put so eloquently that in listening to it, or the entire album really, i don't get that dark angry feel. it's soothing, in a way
of course this is pure reaction to his music which is gonna be different for everyone etc. i just can't fathom like hating myself while listening to elliott

Roman candle was ace except there's no reason to not lay some lyrics on that one track

Well its pretty much fact in his earlier life he was incredibly depressed and used drugs to self medicate. He hated himself, thought he was a complete worthless loser, a lot of his songs are about that. I find the first two dark as hell, especially compared to his later more intricate poppy stuff. The way the first albums are produced also provide a soft, yet dark atmosphere for me. Their very bare and lonely sounding. His later stuff isn't happy yayyayayay shit, but they are definitely lighter melodically and are more intricate musically.

as for the dark point i like someguest's take
whatever though brilliant music either way

I don't know if I'd put his personality in a box with his music though. I'm sure depressed people can create happy music and vice versa. Those aspects of his life may be true, but that doesn't change the affect the music has on the listeners.

@Rom, obviously its a soothing song just when listening to it, its a great, catchy tune. But I definitely disagree....I get an incredibly dark, lonely, depressed feeling from the entire album. His diction also supports those claims. Every other word is fuck, and his articulation of those parts just adds to the dark feel of those two albums for me. I definitely agree with you saying you can't hate yourself when listening to Elliott, his music is so great regardless of any dark connotations that can be applied, but what I am saying is that Roman Candle and S/t contain a lot of dark, self loathing songs on them. The songs are just very witty about demonstrating those feelings. I do see your point though
