i really want to like this, and the lyrics are awesome, but i'll be damned if the music isn't about as bog-standard as indie-rock gets

No way. Well, I disagree that is.

Album has steel Guitar, Punky guitar-chords, quiet acoustics, etc. The drums on, let's say the first track, are very interesting, and throughout the record, the whole band is playing great. Plus, there are some cool licks, riffs and soli here and there. IMO, this record is so fucking good
