True but they did get noticeably better in Cities. And in New Surrender, except for "Breaking" they were pretty good iirc.
It's just a giant regression, lyrically. But that's only true for a few songs (like the chorus of "Art of War")

But fuck that, I don't care, the album still rules.

How on earth did they go from songs like '*fin' to 'Art of War'? ('Art of War' is what I think is the best on this, replace it
with that you think is the best here for the question to make sense - ie this is utterly terrible compared to Cities)
'this is absolutely their worst album, i honestly don't know what people hear in this. lyrics are awful by anberlin's
standards, the songs are so formulaic...everything just sounds tired. i hate to say it, but i think the switch to a major label
killed them.' - this is basically spot on

Meh some of the lyrics are really atrocious like the chorus of "Art of War" but then again, there's always been a side of them that has that, like:
"You make breaking hearts look so easy, seems like you've done this before"
and
"Adelaide, Adelaide! You really got me going this time"
Lyrics have deteriorated, yeah, but that's not true of the album as a whole. The band's always stuck to cliches anyways ("Who needs enemies when we've got friends?") but as a whole I wouldn't say they're offensively bad.
"Pray Tell," for example, has pretty great lyrics, and a lot of the rest of the songs' lyrics are solid ("Impossible," "Closer," "Depraved," "Down")

This album fluctuates so much for me
i should prob adjust my rating

Yeah this actually alternates between an easy 4.5 and second favorite to a 3.5 and least favorite.
It should probably end up a 4 but I feel weird having 4/5 of their albums at 4/5

Anberlin rocks and can do no wrong. That's my opinion.

I have a feeling their next album will just be covers of teen pop Britney Spears songs...baby one more time.
instant 5/5

Oh it's definitely true.
I don't know how (why?) a band writes lyrics like (*fin)'s or Godspeed's and suddenly puts out some crap, half-assed lyrics

That actually makes sense.
And it's quite a shame actually.
You could probably make an album full of Anberlin's crap songs from each album, rate it a 1.5/5, and then add in better songs off b-sides to improve each album

Truth. My favorite Anberlin song is a b-side (The Haunting), and their iTunes bonus tracks consistently rule (Graviora Manent from New Surrender, All We Have from Dark Is the Way). I even liked Uncanny off of Cities Special Edition.

yeah i also love uncanny. in this case i was quite lucky that i downloaded the special edition of cities when i wanted to listen to the album.
