The insane quality of dm releases these past few years got me thinking, so I'm ending my bumping spree on a question:
Will we ever see another year like '91 or '93?
Like, except for the truly innovative releases like Effigy or Obscura, many albums we now consider classics were conceived by guys being inspired by each other's sounds or their local/national scenes, but their access to the dm library as a whole was obviously very limited.
Today's unrestricted availability, along with the relative ease of procuring both instruments and recording gear, should have led to another one of those years by now. Despite said general quality, though, the density of really outstanding material doesn't seem to be as high as it was back then. Wonder why that is.

Idk I mean those years are highly regarded for good reason, but I do also think there is a good amount of innovation and inspired music being made today too.
Nostalgia also probably plays a role in the judgment of years long past
So idk lol

While I agree to that notion, I'm definitely not nostalgic for stuff released at a time when I was listening to whatever eurodance dross the radio fed me.
Sure, the quality of those legendary albums has (also) always been measured in relation to their age, but their perceived greatness is also rooted in their minimalism, which just makes them the building blocks everything that came after has been based on and therefore compared to. Naturally, that kind of "basicness" cannot be achieved anymore unless we introduce new, as in never heard before, instruments and/or techniques to the mix.
Not saying there's no innovation going on, because there's many modern classics to be found in recent years alone. Still, when was the last year with 20 or even 15 releases that could be considered classics of the genre?
