These guys remind me how much of a sucker I am for tremolo picking. This still needs to sink in a bit but after 5-10 listens this is no doubt a solid record.

Glad to hear you like it as much as I do Zero. And I am with you to some extent; There's just something about that guitar-work. I've seen it get old with a few other acts, but there is enough variety in the melodies here to more than get by.

yeah this album is pretty great. a lot better than GWW...that album is boring as hell. and kinda shitty but you know.

Hey... What... Hang on a tick. I actually am surprised anyone could think that 'GWWhale' was "boring as hell" and like this so much. They're not all that different.

^Agreed. But I guess I can see how one might have gotten bored of slower tunes like "Looming Moon" and "Werewolves." both records are solid 4s imo

No doubt this is a quicker album, but the final 2 songs are relatively slower.
I'm more inclined to presume that Sean prefers the more technical & post-hardcore aspect of this album, rather than the more accessible portions of their debut.

I dont know why everyone thinks this album is quicker. It's extremely slow, without hooks, and the lyrics aren't good. I'm a fairly big fan of GWW and this album is lacking.

Hooks & lyrics have nothing to do with pace. Just on the basis of ballads, this has less than 'GWWhale'. Therefore, one could come to the conclusion that it's quicker.

maybe they didn't change enough from their first album...the vocals are too similar, however they make up for it in the guitar work. still, a good album for sure.
|

The vocals were at least pretty catchy on the first album. It's like they traded catchiness for technicality.

Agree with both of your comments. There is definitely a trade-off there, but I think it works out roughly even when all is said & done. Of course, that - as always - comes down to personal opinion.

Technicality?

Hey, even your 2.5 buddy Waior used that word.

idk davey, i think this is quite different from GWW...that album is a lot more run-of-the-mill post-hardcore/metalcore with his crazy vocals, and this album's compositions seem to fit the vocals and their overall style much better. if you took away his vocals from GWW, you're left with a generic post-hardcore with metalcore tendencies record. this one on the other hand has more of its own identity. plus it's just better.

This may have more of its own identity, but that can also be seen as less variety. In a way, by saying "if you took away his vocals from GWW...', you are saying that his vocals were better there... They were definitely more immediate, melodic & catchy imo.
Hence the trade-off I spoke of just before. Sounds like we're coming from different streets on this LP, but getting to the same destination (a rating of 4).

actually i think his vocals sound better on this album. i might be crazy because he might sound the same but to me he sounds like he's improved.

Hmm, not so sure myself. His actual vocals may be the same or a touch better, BUT the writing for his vocals has taken a step down for mine. Less hooks, less variety & reduced effectiveness in the lyrics.
Of course, I'm/we're being picky here & only carrying out this exercise for the sake of comparison. I still gave the album a high rating.
