Just my thoughts.

I actually posted this review to Facebook because many of my friends (myself included) are HUGE Converge fanboys. I like what you've written, though I disagree. I think much of the reason people are angry is because they refuse to let themselves hear a different opinion of what they hold dear.

For the sake of the conversation I'll bring up the Edgar Allen Poe comment. Many people think Poe is a hack because he is too general, too focused on the dark in his own life, and a "thief" of other's ideas. You, however make it pretty clear that you think he is a valid "artist". I don't disagree with you, but opinion on him is pretty much all over the map. I think the same can be said for this album. I can play "Jane Doe" for any number of people, with any number of musical tastes, and hear the gamut of opinions. Many of my friends that do not like "metal" or "hardcore" love it, while many of my "extreme" music fans despise it. I think we all need to take a step back and realize that it's YOUR viewpoint and leave it at that.

Hell, Jacob Bannon once told me at a show opening for Glassjaw that he hated Tool, and we know how this site feels about them.

And a sidenote; I'm an old man considering the viewership of this place.

Well, my best friend, whom I tuned on to Converge with this very album, thinks it 100% correct. Again, he disagrees with it, but knows exactly what you're trying to convey. I'm pretty sure that I'm gathering that you put this review here to incite a huge response; and it worked! This album is the definition of esoteric, but I believe "Jane Doe"'s appeal is because of that.

I agree that Poe's poetry is what I would consider "stifling"; he doesn't ever stray from his one known use of meter. Many of his stories are amazing to me also. I don't know a single lick of French, so I can't really comment there. And though it is "trendy", I still love "The Tell-Tale Heart".

Obviously you are a student of art, I believe, probably, a music theory major. I was too, but this is where our judgments differ; I believe music that is insanely "personal" to be more revealing, while you seem to believe that music should encompass a more internal dialogue with "new" and "understated" ideas. I don't dismiss you for that, I just think that you're on the other end of the spectrum than me. And that, sir, is what makes for beautiful and worthwhile art.

Yeah buddy, that was me.

Again, we differ. I consider myself the ultimate dabbler. I like keeping my focus open and willing, but that's because I'm a non-traditional student. I like leaving my eyes, ears, and soul open to anything; it ensures that I don't ever think I know everything. Exactly why I absolutely dig this essay ( I do agree that it's less a review).

Yep, just accepted. I actually had to repost the "Jane Doe" review for some reason, but you're free to take part in any new conversation that happens. We'll have to get together at some point on some IM service get acquainted. Seems like you have a good head on your shoulders, and I'd love to have more conversation on music, and art in general.

Well they don't support your interpretation at all then, you're just projecting your own values onto something else...which is something you mock the album for allowing in the first place. =/ I'm not arguing or anything, I just don't see it.

...yeah I think focusing on the lyrics is missing at least 75% of the album but it's still an interesting view on the philosophy of art as it's evolved in history. Personally I think the idea that the album was written by no one, or anyone, really fits into what punk and hardcore is about. The group aren't above their fans, but rather, are fans of the collective soul of punk (no pun intended) and are just doing their best to express themselves and give back to the musical community that shaped them. I don't think Bannon asks to be considered a literary genius. He once described himself as a kid ripping off Slayer.

My belief that your review fails to accomplish what you want it to. If you're saying that this album fails to provide a cathartic experience because the lyrics are contrived from a bastardization of artistic expression, then I'm going to ask you why I, as a listener with almost no familiarity with those lyrics (I have never read them, and can only make out brief passages), am granted catharsis by listening to this album.

The answer of course is because you are reviewing but one facet of this album. Jane Doe is not a poem, and you fail to take into account the emotional connection a few dissonant guitar riffs and some screaming can produce. There is more to any album than just its lyrics, which is why I am able to emotionally relate even to bands who are singing in different languages (Envy being a good example of this.)

So while I think you're arguments are good about the quality of these lyrics (though I still disagree, and find their universality to be quite comforting,) I think you're approaching this from much too narrow of an angle.

Yeah, the album flows so well from one song to the next, it actually feels simultaneously like the longest and shortest 45.2 minutes of recorded music in history.
