I find some of the reviews to be rather accurate on this one to be honest.
Although I liked it quite a lot myself, I appreciate that other critics found it to be less 'charming' than their previous two outings.

Saying that; this album feels like a swimming pool with tainted water. It's only a matter of cleaning the water for the next album.

i mean it's less charming if you define charm by the number of glockenspielen

I don't think it's just that Knott.

In their previous outings, Los Campesinos! were far less co-ordinated with their instruments, it made for this expressive sense of silliness, yet while they did this and the glock was far more complimentary; they still remained more mature with their writing, not stretching above what they know. It was sincere silliness.

While Romance is Boring sticks to this open-minded and down to earth lyricism, their music is taking their stories and opinions a little serious. It can come across as a little pretentious at times as to say 'Gods make their own importance'

As you know Knott, you convinced me to bump this from a 3.5 to a 4 but I still stand that their previous albums are far more sophisticated by being totally and utterly daft.

yeah no question. ^

and when did implied "seriousness" start to have any weight on pretension?

Definitely not their best, I'll say that.

It's not the seriousness of the sound, rather the seriousness of the lyricism. It's great lyricism but I find they are over glorifying what they know, at times. It's great and all but tone it down; it reminds me of International Tweexcore.

This bored me a lot. Like it had some fun lines overall though "this is really not that good but i wish it was".

i like the more serious overtones of the lyrics on this tbh. i think them being a tad bit less flippant gives them a level of depth that creates more of an emotional connection between the listener and the album which only adds to the replay value.

Yeah, perhaps you're right. The lyrics were far better here, though I still feel they need to work on it, if they plan to take themselves seriously.

but the point is that los campesinos! are not a band that sit down and think here is a serious song. even the most serious song on here has some funny lines in it (on every video games machine they called her triple A / you could never kiss a tory boy without wanting to cut off your tongue again)
