The more I listen to this the more I'm convinced that Jared is completely right, this is Converges worst album. It lacks all the subtlety thats made Converge such a pioneering force and feels so incredibly forced.
|
| |
But it makes up for those things by having songs that rule as hard as Dark Horse.

Dark Horse is like the best example of the lack of subtlety here. I mean, yeah, it's a hella cool riff, but coming from a band whose defining mark has been with sonic experimentation and pushing the boundaries of of their sound, this record seems so content to rest on its laurels and just stagnate the moment it hits upon something that sounds good. And sure, alot of it sounds good, but it's still on the bottom rung of anything Converge has ever done.
|
| |
I wouldn't call it stagnation though. I agree that this album stopped pushing the envelope like their previous ones, but I think it's more that the Converge that recorded this album was having fun doing so, which I don't think you could say was ever where they were coming from before. I guess what I mean is that this album isn't as ambitious or focused as their others, but it's big, fun, and shows what is still one of the best metalcore bands ever.
|
| |
it's still much better than 'average' though

Yeah but the problem is I don't think they've quite made that break between "ambitious focused Converge" and "fun loving Converge" all that well - especially when you got songs like Worms Will Feed which keep the meandering thing that Converge used to do so well minus the atmosphere that used to make it work. Just to use one example. And it's average Converge, i just can't justify rating this anything near something even as flawed as No Heroes, which still kicks ass.

I find this to be much more enjoyable than No Heroes. Worms Will Feed is probably one of my favourite tracks on the album actually...:/ It's certainly not their best, but I think their blend of accessibility and (I quote) "cunt ripping goodness" works well here.

yeah, I like this a lot. Not the biggest fan of Worms Will Feed, and I agree with Streetlight on that track, but stuff like the title track, Effigy, Cutter and Cruel Bloom still give this album plenty of dense atmosphere.
|
| |
Yeah, I mean this is still a Converge record.

i like this the best out of all their albums, seems it is the most focused on having good songs and less about being "art".
