With this album, System of a Down finally shed the label of nu-metal for good. While thier first three albums, they had some decidedly non-numetal moments, most of thier songs were still the sludgy nu-metal sound. Mezmerize changes all that, and I can't say that's a good thing. Everything on this album is executed with a murderous, mistake free precision that is almost frightening. I have heard that Shavo actually only played bass on three of the songs, because Daron wanted to make it sound perfect (which makes you wonder, is Old School Hollywood have Daron singing, playing lead guitar and bass?). This album is not the perfect masterpiece Toxicity was, or the near-flawless s/t album. It is short, and full of holes. Daron seems to be trying to take over the band, and I don't like that at all. I want to hear Serj's voice more than Daron's whiny, childlike one. The coolest song on here has got to be the grammy winner B.Y.O.B. I know hardcore fans are saying that it's one of the album's worst, but I'm here to tell you that they're wrong. It is an excellent, and wierd song (Barbarisms in Barbaras?). Revenga and Cigaro are probably the other two best tracks. And they all come in the first four tracks on the album. Question!'s riffing is too choppy, and Violent Pornography doesn't have those driving riffs that we love. Old School Hollywood is wierd techno s**t, and Radio/Video even has some bluegrass elements. But This Cocaine and Sad Statue stand out besides the first threee tracks, they probably round out the top five. Overall, this is a good SOAD effort, but certianly not thier best.

These guys are geniuses.

They're far from that. Making good music doesn't make you a genius.

Your're right. Making good music is better than being a genius.

they seem to have alot of beef with Hollywood in this album, they have probably 4 songs directed towards the coruptness of Hollywood in Mezmerize.

Thank you Hunter. Old School Hollywood was one of my favorites off here, I don't know why everyone hates it. There is just a bit of techno distortion at the beginning, the rest is pretty straightforward hard rock.

I think its awesome how they take a stab at Hollywood though, and those songs are entertaining. Its just that i get sick of the lyrics based about Hollywood. Wouldn't you consider that repetitive? Ya know he wrote 300 sum odd songs for Hypnotize/Mezmerize and he should've picked some better variety. Thats just IMO

Most people think the vocals in the verse are anoying as hell. I think anyone who can't stand anoying vocals just shouldn't listen to SOAD. THe main riff in Old School Hollywood is probably the most badass moment on the album exept for Cigaro.
