I ought to dig into him more. him and Bartok. gotta balance the textbook beauty with the crazy weirdo classical.

"because if Welcome to Hell gets a 4.5, even the unremarkable compositions of Mahler or Vivaldi are orders of magnitude more accomplished on both a craft and artistic level, so what does something like this get?"

how u rate music based on how the next note and this other one and shit

it's ~classical~, therefore accomplished and sophisticated.

honestly, timbre and mixing and cultural place are just as important to a piece than the sequence of notes tbh

I mean yeah. It's just a strange thing to reconcile a decade of music study that champions this with my personal taste that puts Winterkalte and Oceanic at the top. I've done this shit and it's hard. It takes a lifetime of study and knowledge, but that's not what art is all about. That's craftmanship. I'm an academic and just someone who loves music, and it's like am I supposed to find a balance or just go with my heart, you know?

i feel u man. i rated beethoven's no. 9 a 2.5 but i can't justify my rating other than it was too bombastic and dramatic for my taste but i still respect the man's works and his contributions to music

my justification is that it either sounds good to these ears or doesn't.
why overthink that shit.

Ratings are very srs business

I don't get people who rate based on influence/cultural significance anyways

Jac, I think that comes from 5 being "classic," which implies a certain level of recognition outside its immediate quality. Sput's fault.

i wouldn't rate this 2.5 if i based my rating on influence/cultural/w/e. 3.5 is the safest rating like "i don't know how i feel about this but its pretty well known and highly revered so ya 3.5 it is!"
