Well its not really your first DM album because Opeth is Death Metal, just Progressive Death Metal. And you're right this will make some of Opeth's stuff seem like TLC.

Opeth is pretty much just metal with progressive rock tendencies. Nothing about their sound is death metal aside from Akerfeldt's growls.

I consider Opeth's music Progressive Death Metal, but regular Metal with Progressive Rock influences would probably work too. IAmInsect, even though this is one of the best Death Metal albums ever, i think you should start with something like Hypocrisy or At The Gates because it is very melodic but brutal at the same time. This album is really for people already into the genre.

The problem I usually run into when trying to start with melodic metal bands ppl recommend to me is they either turn out to sound metalcoreish (In Flames) or they sound just like Opeth (Edge of Sanity). Opeth clones are not necessarily bad but I already have Opeth and I don't like most metalcore. I just wish I could find a brutal yet melodic and non-monotonous band

Listen to early Aborted, they've got a good mix of growls and screams, and the early stuff is fairly melodic.

Dont worry about either of those bands being Metalcore-ish or sounding like Opeth. That isnt the case with either of them. Early Hypocrisy is more Blackened Death Metal and now they are Melodic Death Metal (they sound nothing like In Flames and have no Metalcore in them) and At The Gates is the band that invented Melodeath so they are both good places to start. I would also say recent The Black Dahlia Murder. That is more Melodic Death/Black Metal.

No, this would be fine. If you can get into this you'll be able to get into pretty much all death metal, and since this is probably top 10 best death metal albums of all time you won't be getting much better quality either.

Avoid most melodeath. If you get 'into' melodeath you'll very quickly realize how stale/lame/gay the vast majority of it is.

Some Melodeath like The Black Dahlia Murder, Dark Tranquillity, Hypocrisy, and At The Gates is amazing. And i completely agree with you about Nocturnal. That is by far my favorite Death Metal album ever.

they sound just like Opeth (Edge of Sanity)
Edge of Sanity don't really sound like Opeth at all unless you consider having clean vocals and growls defining qualities to compare with other bands.

Still waiting for this, it's been in the mail for about a week now. This Message Edited On 03.25.08

This was my first DM album a few years ago and it (being Phobophile) singlehandedly got me into the genre.
my death metal introduction in a nutshell.

My first Death Metal album was Ghost Reveries by Opeth. Opeth and Cradle Of Filth got me into Metal. Before that all i listened to was rap and now i dont listen to anything but metal. It weird what music can do to you. I used to think that this was just satan screaming shit, just like some of my friends tell me now lol.

This finally came in the mail. To anyone with a hard copy: I ordered a used copy on Amazon and I was wanting to make sure it's actually legit; the case and booklet look fine but the CD looks iffy. The readable side is that dark color that burnt CDs have and the printed side is just a black and white photo of a Cryptopsy show with the band name in their trademark font and the album name in like Times New Roman or something else plain. Is it supposed to look like this?

EDIT: The sound is fine, but I can't really hear the bass like everyone says you can. This Message Edited On 04.01.08

IAmInSect,

To answer your question, my cd has the front cover image on it. A close up of Jesus head on the platter. Fucking metal!

Yah it's John the Baptist I'm purty sure. Anywho I looked at the bottom of the CD again in a room with more light and it looks normal where there's data written, but on the outside where it's blank is where it's darker than a normal CD. Ah well I don't care rly since the sound is fine.
