How about the fact that the astof (Or what is was called) was built ON a Pagan shrine.

I mean, I would never set fire to a church but why don't you put yourself in his position?
He loves his forefather's culture and doesn't like christianity messing with it and making itself part of his every day life.
Most Norwegians wouldn't stand up like this but he did.

Of course it's personal. He wants revenge on Christianity for what the early Christians did to the Pagans in the early Middle Ages. At least that's what I've gathered.
