As for people talking shit about Rammstein in Germany, that's partly just due to their shock rock thing they like to do (Mein Teil especially caused a huge stir because that whole Rotenburg cannibal case was just so outrageous), but also the fact they they were constantly brushed off as a right wing band by ill-informed journalists mainly because they used scenes from a Leni Riefenstahl nazi propaganda movie for their video for Stripped.
If you just look at the surface of what they do, I think it is easy to misinterpret them as they parodize most of what they are perceived to be. Starting with Till's rolling r sound, the often sexualized wordplays to patriotism. Amerika is a prime example. The whole song is basically a protest song against american capitalism, yet many americans love that song without second thought to what it actually means :D
The nazi thing hurt them, however, as they are actually more or less very left wing in their views, growing up in a communist state (Links 2 3 4 makes that very clear).

I find it so hard to pick between this record and Herzeleid as my favourite Rammstein. Never been too big on Sehnsucht and Mutter (both have some songs I've come to dislike a little) but the debut and this have no weak tracks for me. Rosenrot and LIFAD are nice, too.
Fun band anyway!
