I agree that his lyrics are sometimes not the best, but the guy creates amazing music. I really don't see how you can relate them to Breaking Benjamin or Katatonia. Maybe you need to listen to them more. Have you tried Fear of A Blank Planet?

I'd much rather listen to some music with lackluster lyrics but with stong melodies/great vocals than some 'profound' or relatable lyrics with mediocre vocals and repetitive melodies.

usually good music and 'profound' lyrics go hand in hand

if you're a good musician you can be proficient in both

I've never thought Reznor's lyrics were facepalm worthy

obviously they're not the best though

I like to improve Steve Wilson's lyrics when I sing to them. Like the "sleep together" refrain. Sooo much better if it was "sleep forever."

TDS is the only album where his lyrics are pretty good. The rest are passable save a few tracks here and there.

I beg to differ. Prog music, like this band, is a good example. Many of the sputnik bands (indie/alt mostly) don't strike a chord with me tbh. It's simply too vocal/lyric orientated: lyrics that tell a story that one can 'relate' to, and unfortunately the music and vocals often come off as quite bland. The instrumental side of music (incl. vocal melodies) should be the carrying element, not some lyrics/story telling you how to feel or relate. But then again what are good lyrics? I guess that's when they're so good that they'll eventually take center stage and become the main focus - Back at square one.

That being said, good music and lyrics can be combined but I think lyrics need to be more neutral, an addition so to speak, in order to let the music as whole speak for itself.
