This is about a 3.8 for me. It's quality Tool, but too many moments where I find myself thinking they could've done more given the time they had.

3.8 is a 4 though. Awesome Nightbringer.

I'm still floating between a 3.5 and 4. It's just not 4 worthy yet. Time will tell.

Who knows whether this will still be a 4.5 for me in a few months lol. But I just came from another straight-through jam of this (minus interludes, which much improved the experience) and I had a blast. So just being true to how I feel in this moment.

True. Much can change in a few months. I gave 2 5's this year that I brought down .5 lol this has a little more meaning and represents my 2019 on many aspects...so I don t think that will happen...but who knows?

I may have to listen to their previous two to make sure I'm not an idiot. It's been so long, I could just be getting weary of the whole "Tool vibe." I just know this ain't hitting me as something new and aggressive like I used to think of them.

Not agressive by any means this time 4sure.

10,000 Days wasn't overly aggressive either, but there was some magic in there.

I enjoy this, but it just doesn't have the same highs as some of their past efforts. 10K was one of their weaker albums but it still had some of those moments, like with Wings. This just doesn't quite have those same moments for me though. It's just kinda solid beginning to end, but never explodes.

(2) but because maybe its not about that this time (explosion or agression)

This has really grown on me. I think this is simultaneously one of their most complete and lacking records at the same time.
As a body of work it flows much better than 10,000 Days, which to me is much more bloated than this and seems more like a collection of songs than a flowing record, and the atmosphere on here is fantastic. This is a very cohesive record.
On the flip side this album lacks the riffs, vocal melodies and singles of nearly all their other releases. All of thier past records had infectious singles, catchy riffs and memorable vocal melodies, this seems to be missing all of that.
That being said, they'vetraded in the mainstream rock singles for very intricate extended tracks with fantastic atmosphere and they succeed with that.

So I figured out I really enjoyed listening to the album like:
1. Descending
2. Pneuma
3. Invincible
4. Legion Inoculant
5. Culling Voices
6. Fear Inoculum
7. 7empest
I feel the t/t is an awesome penultimate track and descending is an amazing opener. Also gets rid of the bad interludes (except Legion which is sweet), and it fits nicely at 78 minutes.
