This is so much better than the new one. If they make another album I'll be satisfied if it's a similar quality to this or TWFM; it's probably not realistic at this point to expect another masterpiece like Alligator, Boxer, or HV again.

Walk It Back is so great.

it's the sort of track that reminds me why I like this album so much more than the new one - the 'middle tier' material is so much better

Well I consider TWFM to be their best album and this album is a near masterpiece. Haven’t heard the new one yet but, in my mind, these guys are still making great music. IAETF May be a slip but that doesn’t mean the next one won’t be great.

Nice 4.5 Lark, this really is up with their best, another masterpiece as far as I’m concerned.

It's not that I've lost faith in The National to be brilliant or anything; I like the new album quite a bit btw, it's just their worst since the debut and doesn't really sound like them most of the time, so it just makes their future prospects a bit shaky imo. I have no idea what they'll sound like next, which is exciting in a sense, but also a little worrying since the new one has a decent amount that doesn't work for me, which is strange to feel about a National album.

Okay yeah, I get what you mean. Curious to see how I’ll feel after I listen to it. Probably gonna be sitting with SWB another week or so before I dive in though.

@Talons.... Word, I can align with that. I have grown to like their latest, but at the same time, it has weakened my enthusiasm in a strange way. They were damn near magic to me, but it's fading.

You'll probably get over it

Well, unlike other National albums, most of this was immediate for me. The other albums had to grow, and my appreciation for them increased.
And while most of this was immediate for me, I’m burning out on after about roughly a dozen listens. I was hoping for more longevity. I think the problem is that the songs I thought would continue growing on me didn’t really for the most part.
Still a great album but bumped down from 4.5 to 4. I have HV at 4 and like these pretty equally.

Probably gonna move on to IAETF tomorrow. It’s always sad to get to the last album of a new discog. I want more “new” National damnit.
I have Frightened Rabbit and The Dear Hunter at the top of my queue to tackle now. Thinking I’ll go with FR first because TDH discog is pretty vast (gonna listen to everything, including all of Color Spectrum and Migrant).

Considering where I was in my relationship when thisbalbum came out, the opening track fucks me up every time I listen to it.

Nobody Else has now become my favourite opener from this band which says quite a lot seeing how The National openers are incredible
