“His drumming is serviceable at least, and it's not entirely his fault that so many drummers he influenced came to surpass him”

I would argue that it’s his fault that he never strived to improve beyond the bare minimum leading his peers to easily surpass him

Yeah, that's why I said "not entirely". Obviously he's still partially to blame there, but I think what I was trying to say is that back when he was hot shit in the 80s, there wasn't as much of an established standard yet when it came to more technical metal drummers. So to me, it was at least somewhat inevitable that he'd be surpassed by so many people

"Plus, I really do have to admire the more complex parts he played on MoP and AJFA. The time signature changes in bridge of Frayed Ends of Sanity are some crazy stuff"

I could have sworn there's evidence out there that says the drum tracks in AJFA are a million drums takes spliced together to each create one track

What, really? I thought that happened only on St. Anger

Myth either I saw it on Youtube or there was a conversation here not too long ago. I might be getting my facts wrong though.

Wait, the needed editing to make Laes sound the way he did in St. Anger? Damn.

Not exactly, but I know that Lars wouldn't even revord the whole songs, he'd play a part and ask to be repeated wherever it's the same, so really a ''copy/paste'' logic went into the recording, rather than ''pick what's worth it''

Man I call bullshit on this unless someone presents some proof. Definitely not a big Lars fan and everyone knows Lars isn't the best drummer out there but that sounds like a new level of weaksauce even for him

A quick search brought this up. It's not quite the same thing I said, but affirms the ''copy/paste'' technique:

4. Bob Rock's unusual post-production editing played a major role in the unnerving sound of the album

After Metallica recorded the songs for St. Anger, Rock went to town. Instead of working with the material to make it sound as cohesive as possible, Rock engaged in some bizarre techniques inspired by avant-garde artists. "A lot of the songs were done in William Burroughs cut-and-paste fashion," Rock said, referencing the beat writer's style of literally cutting up his text and reassembling it in a different order. "There are movements in movie-making and in music where you take technology as an art and you actually abuse it. Some people use ProTools to trick and fool the listener, but we used it more as a creative tool to do something interesting and stretch boundaries. Technically, you'll hear cymbals go away and you'll hear bad edits. We wanted to disregard what everybody assumes records should be and throw out all the rules. I've spent 25 years learning how to do it the so-called right way. I didn't want to do that anymore."

Another source, Loudwire this time, also has Bob Rock saying:

"Technically, you'll hear cymbals go away and you'll hear bad edits,” he said. ”We wanted to disregard what everybody assumes records should be and throw out all the rules. I've spent 25 years learning how to do it the so-called right way. I didn't want to do that anymore."

So yup, it wasn't Lars lazying out of playing the whole thing, because the whole thing wasn't there in the first place. It's just cut up and pasted as a collage

Was more refering to AJFA not using that technique. Honestly St. Anger is garbage and I couldn't care less about it, but Justice is my favorite album by them (there's a version online where you can actually hear the bass, that's my favorite one) and it would be a huge letdown if that were true
