It's definitely a bad thing to do my point is more the idea that this is being treated as some sort of unprecedented betrayal for an artist of his caliber and temperament.
And yeah I'm not a superfan by any stretch but I think the retconning of him as a "borderline scam artist" especially when he's been largely absent from a public eye for the past 10 years is the exact kind of thing I find a bit rich. Was he a scam artist when he made all of his fans watch a livestream of him building shit so they could listen to an album of B-Sides? This is just kinda who he is.

What Rowan said. Also simping for celebrity entitlement is gross af, but some of the fans do be acting like he killed their mom which is also cringe

"Also if your premise is that he's content using his status as an artist as a front for overpriced merch it's not great for your case that he didn't sell anything at Coachella"
perhaps you misinterpreted what I said. I was trying to convey that his crazed stans have no reason to fear some looming retirement from frank as he certainly doesn't have the "fuck you" money that someone like Jay Z or even his pal Tyler has. his limited merch drops and lack of consistent musical releases hasn't allotted him the ability to just blow off fans-not long term anyway. he'll be touring and asking for 100s per ticket on Ticketmaster in no time. to elaborate on your point though, it doesn't seem like he even intended to play at Coachella :}

I mean that's a fair point- I would prob argue his particular status gives him access to a certain type of person with means so he can do things like Homer where he's selling 40k cock rings to people basically in perpetuity. But on the other hand this is the kind of thing that jeopardizes his ability to do that

I'm not trying to come in too hot I just don't use social media anymore so I have to trial balloon thinkpieces elsewhere. "This Is The Frank Ocean We Deserve". There's a paragraph in there about how Ticketmaster dynamic pricing and live music for big acts turning into something only a certain class of people can access subconsciously factor into the outrage, etc.

some good points here and I definitely dont think youre coming in hot at all-i dont think any of us itt are big frank fans. your username makes this funny though as frank could absolutely take a page out of Pablo era Kanye. Kanye slung insanely overpriced merch but at least he showed up to his dates and put on a great show. I get why you find it rich and I'd normally tend to agree, BUT frank broke the code unfortunately and didn't show up(reminds me of death grips). he's finding out that there is a fine line between being quirky/mysterious and being a flake. bailing on shows is no bueno.

I still think the death grips thing is hilarious

I forgot about that lmao

yea and they were barely famous then and still aren't really especially compared to frank. yet you still have a ton of people who refuse to see them because of that stunt and that was 8 years ago. plus those are dudes who really dont give a fuck and I guess frank can follow suit if he wants but even their old asses have to go on tour this summer. fucking with fans like that is just a shit look and you not only lose credibility but $$$$$

I just think it makes such a great story. You can say you were at that show. That’s hilarious. That’s not “I was at fyre fest”-tier epic, but it’s still pretty epic. This debacle is not epic.

for many of us it was a blessing in disguise because Soundgarden was the headliner for a lot of those shows and I got to see Cornell before he passed. I didn't really care about Soundgarden until Grips pulled that shit

This is what they intended of course

oh lol I'm not even talking about Coachella with the scam artist comment. moreso thinking of selling $44k cock rings to his weird parasocial fans. not honouring hundreds of orders and never offering refunds for it. this newest thing is pretty mild by dude's standards honestly I agree we shouldn't be acting like it's a huge deal

he’s not selling 44k cock rings to his fans he’s selling them to other rich people who probably don’t even listen to his music
