I would guess it's because of the goal they had to write that song with specific intent and that's just how it turned out. Generic is a good accusation. Banal and cynical I don't think is an appropriate description, but that's what can happen when your focused on what the theme of a song needs to be. Idk, just a random, unimportant thought.

like, they either gave it an honest shot at a mindless fun song and failed miserably by going too hard on the 'mindless' side when the band has never delivered enough instrumentally to carry a whole song, or they're playing some kind of 5D chess metatextual, meta-cynical move about the 'fun' -- and specifically, the lack thereof -- to be had in playing a successful pop band. either way, i don't super vibe with it -- it's not catchy or bouncy enough, it's too repetitive and bare-bones, and its' smug aura mocks me
