Hopefully it'll sound like their signature style a little more, I liked Heritage but so much of why I love this band is their dissonant syncopated riffing and balance of heavy and light which Heritage just completely did away with

I doubt it'll be as good as one of the heavy albums, except Deliverance, but I think we should treat it like a more straight foward version of Storm Corrosion.

I actually ended up liking Heritage a lot, but as countless others have said before, it's a very inconsistent album. Hopefully they can bring back some older Opeth in with the full-on progginess of Heritage to create a better album.

I wish Akerfeldt would just attempt to do some heavy songs again. I could deal with Heritage and likely the upcoming album if even 30% of it was old school DM prog. The fact the band has wholly changed from what they used to be is what bothers me.

I kind of understand why they're trying out something new. I think they're much stronger when they do the DM prog thing and I don't mind that they changed, but it's just not my thing

When I think of Opeth, I think of the intro to Masters Apprentices and stuff like that, not the 70's prog stuff which is not their cup of tea. They need to backtrack and hit that DM again.

It's kind of baffling because their original sound was so unique and original and considered one of the best metal bands of all time, and now they're just retreating into 70's prog worship? It's like wtf. I honestly don't blame heritage haters at all because I agree with most of why they feel the way they do

Na, I disagree.
The direction they are heading in is awesome.
@Talons Heritage doesn't sound like any 70's prog album I've ever heard, ugh.

Opeth is a band of variety, so I don't have too much of a problem with them retreating into new territory.

Well I'm not really a 70s progmaster like some on this site - so it's not surprisingly I'm not diggin' their current direction. I don't mind 70s prog, but I'll seldom choose to listen to it over metal.

Yeah, but they have a huge wealth of that kind of stuff, is it not enough? The new direction might not be the best in the world, but it's not like they had one DM prog album before changing completely. They have a lot to offer and they intend to show the world that, even if the world hates it

@Pleb have you ever listened to 70's prog?

Camel and sort of jethro tull, Comus, y'know those dark atmospheric ones not the flashy poppy stuff like Genesis or Yes

Opeth ripped off Camel with Benighted, calling it '70's prog worship' is kinda steep cos the album sounds very unique.

If Opeth turned into Genesis or Yes, then I would have a problem.

Pree much the only time I get pumped to 70s prog.
