Melodeath's one of the more misunderstood genres imo. Granted there are plenty of factors where I can understand their viewpoints on it (the mixed quality of a good number of bands, being basically the genre to influence the modern US metalcore scene etc.), but a lot of it is also a bit blown out of proportion I feel.

I think the backlash against it is pretty deserved and frankly not severe enough. Like, when it comes to combining aggression with tons of melody, I'd consider this retrograde from a lot of thrash metal that was better in both aspects. Let alone other melodeath from pretty much this exact time.
