This album was a disappointment when it came out and hasn't changed since. Damnation is a little better, and Blackwater Park is great, but I feel it is a tad overrated. I definitely don't listen to it as much as Morningrise - Still Life. Never got into anything after Damnation

Blackwater Park is simply OK. I honestly don't get why it was singled out as a peerless masterpiece considering how much prog metal came out that is much more ambitious and better than it.

I mean, frankly, the only reason so many Blackwater Park fans dislike Deliverance despite both sharing many of the same compositional problems is that this is more overtly death metal.

@Casavir It's leaps and bounds more interesting than this. It's got some great riffs and a solid atmosphere, however I think it's starts out strong with Leper Affinity and kinda drags on a bit throughout unlike anything before it. The title track is very overrated.

Leper Affinity is one of the weakest tracks on the album though and the album as a whole is easily just as repetitive as Deliverance with The Funeral Portrait being the most diverse song on it.

"They use more acoustic which means it's better." - Darius 2018

Yea, that part completely threw me off too. Leper Affinity fucking rules, it's a top 10 Opeth song.

"let's single out the one track on the record whose whole motif is to rely on one singular main riff as the entire basis of its songwriting"

And the result was pretty middling.

This has been climbing up the ranks over the past years for me. Have come to love it more and more. Great record with superb riffs and vocals and everything. Have come to see it as the modern-Opeth version of Morningrise in a way, with a bigger emphasis on Death Metal obviously.

Like I literally have never seen one of his reviews that I agree with. The Blackening is the closest one, but I simply dislike that album. He genuinely hates it according to his review

I've also noticed that he dropped a lot of his ratings pretty hard after writing his reviews. It's weird

With hating The Blackening? A totally reasonable reaction to an album like that?

A 1 is also an entirely understandable score, let's be honest.
