I split the album into thirds

The 1st third is best

Then the 3rd third is next best

The middle third is worst

Man I love the live version of The System where he shouts/screams any other way.

I’ll Still Destroy You is fucking amazing btw. This is at least a 4 for me, The last four tracks are still growing and will decide whether it’s a 4 or 4.5 (doesn’t feel like it’s gonna be a 5).

Final third is definitely the best for me, the last 4 songs are one of the very best runs in their catalogue.

They’re growing on me but at this moment, Nobody-System is my favorite run here. Also love I’ll Still Destroy You and Guilty Party.

I keep listening to the t/t as I’ve seen a lot of people here praise it — saying it’s top 10 National material, one poster even said it may be their best song and I’m like — did we hear the same song?

It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just kindof...there. A 3/5 and probably my least favorite here. But I keep thinking I must be missing something so I keep listening...

...those who like it, what am I missing here?

Give it time Larkinhill. I didn't get it at first either and I'm not brave enough to try to explain why it's good, but one day it will click with you and become a top 3-5 song on the album. Destroy You is still my favorite here though pretty easily.

Yeah suffice it to say that the title track is the least immediate track here, maybe even in their entire catalogue.

you're not alone larkin, that song actually irritates the fuck out of me. it's like matt's actively trying to see how monotonous he can possibly sound. whole album is pretty mediocre by their standards but the title track is definitely among their weakest songs

he's practically mumbling on that track. i don't think he's ever sounded less inspired. "sleep well listener" it should be called.

Well, this is a man who admitted he purposefully has tried to approximate things like 'three days no sleep' and 'bad head cold' in his vocal delivery on songs like Lemonworld which is great and the style on the t/t here sounds like a continuation of that type of experiment to me.

Possibly the best thing on the album imo and an approach I wish they'd expanded on to replace the redundant cannibalising and glossy 'gal features' that filled up the new album. I actually feel the exact opposite - Matt rarely sounds as natural and invested in his words recently as he does there.

Guess it was a one off and it is a bit different so I get not everyone would dig.

Sometimes Gyro I wonder if you’re willfully missing the point

is the point to sound like shit? if that's the point then it isn't a very good one. so either the point is stupid, or i get it fine and well and just think it sounds bad.

i def do agree doof the oversaturization of female vox on the new one kills it. would take them any day over mumbling nonsense though, personally. i do like some cuts from this however, primarily the opener and penultimate track.

But that's what fans do. They like to think there's a point to certain songwriting decisions, while in reality it is simply uninspired writing that brings us the ultimately bad product. Title track is one of the worst songs this band has ever written.

The first third of the album defo rules, though.

Think the instrumental is genuinely inspired and I'm a fan of spoken word delivery - Lambchop, Tindersticks, etc

Yeah the delivery on the t/t is more interesting and memorable than almost anything on the new album for sure. The instrumental is a beautiful layered piece, one of their best mood-setters if you really focus in on it. It’s the perfect sleepy comedown for what’s probably their most nocturnal album ever. Helps seal the deal for this as a classic imo.

Interesting. I didn’t know that. At any rate, he definitely succeeds, and I absolutely love his style. Quickly becoming one of my favorite lyricists and singers. Just has a really unique style and timbre.
