think of the alternate timeline where lars dies in 1986 and is remembered as one of the best drummers of all time, while cliff cuts his hair and becomes a sellout like everyone else.

honestly if that happened, they would've gotten a much better metal drummer and they probably would've gotten heavier.

the lighthouse is an excellent movie, and dafoe's performance is one of my all time favorites. first time I ever watched the lighthouse was on LSD and it was actually awesome

Lars doesn't deserve the hate he gets.

Sure he's not a drumming prodigy, but he does good work.

Lars does cop it and mainly because of his ego. But I've always thought he was an interesting drummer not just hi-hat and snare snoozefests

One of Metallica's biggest flaws has always been it's lack of focus on drumming. A lot of their songs, while great, never strove to have good drumming to enhance their tunes, so Lars has never needed to push himself, because the songs barely ever need him.

Yeah, I think his ego and overall personality are what really bury his reputation even more than his drumming. His drumming is serviceable at least, and it's not entirely his fault that so many drummers he influenced came to surpass him

Plus, I really do have to admire the more complex parts he played on MoP and AJFA. The time signature changes in bridge of Frayed Ends of Sanity are some crazy stuff

I’d say I admire that but he literally can’t play those parts live.
