A significant step up from LIVING THINGS, but still ultimately flawed. I enjoy Guilty All The Same and A Line In The Sand, both show the band willing to expand from their usual formula. The album still suffers from the same issues I have with their previous efforts, but at least this one begins to push the foundations a bit.

I still begrudge Brad for the simplicity of the solos on this.

The guy can fucking sweep pick, and ‘In Pieces’ is a clear example of more competent guitarwork, but here (on the band’s heaviest album, no less) it’s just sloppy TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TREMELO PICKING TREMELO PICKING WAH PEDAL WAH PEDAH

For whatever reason, I could never get into this. The heaviness felt really forced to the point that I actually felt like the pop of One More Light was a more natural, believable direction for the band.

Do you mean it feels forced in context of their other records or does the music itself feel forced? I think I read your point earlier, but I don't fully understand it

Same here. If One More Light didn’t exist then this would be my least fave LP, although it does have its fair share of decent songs like Final Masquerade, Rebellion and A Line in the Sand. The only worthwhile song on OML was the t/t.

They tried so hard and got so far

In the end the first album was better.

Agree with Sowing, it is heavier alright, but the energy just isn't there. I also don't like all the meaningless feats. First three tracks kinda had a thing going but it went right into meh territory after that.

Stumbled across this little nugget of faeces again today. It still baffles me how bad it is.
