"certainly so for a lot of people but i dont agree that that's a universal prerequisite for adoring this album. for example, i dont have any particular personal experiences attached to this record and i still think it's fucking brilliant. the songwriting and the performances are just phenomenal."

Agreed entirely, its certainly not a universal prerequisite, and I think the musicianship and songcraft here is top notch. I just mean to point out that an awful lot of people who love this record tend to make reference to its cathartic nature and how the group's handling of grief in someway connects with them. I would imagine that those without such a connection wouldn't appreciate it in the same way, or see it as 'best of the decade' material.

"p.s. baffling that this got #1. i get the Jane Doe parallel but for the fact that this record is not on par with Jane Doe."

Indeed, it's not on par; it's much better than JD :P (which I also love)

"and to me this new wave of pop-punk just sounds like people in their 30s/40s who refused to grow up. I just don't get the appeal of people my age singing about sleeping on their parents' floors."

this, so much. i'm not going to lie, when i looked up the band and saw the "pop punk" tag at the top of their page, my heart sank lol. modern punk is so cringe to me these days, it's so hard finding meaningful bands from it. thankfully, this is the good kind (imo). "among the wildflowers" is mind-blowing

Punk has been definitely been in a shitty area for the past decade and a half. Although I would certainly take much of the worst Pop Punk of the 2010s over the worst Pop Punk of the 2000s overall there really wasnt any sort of significant improvement.

I think it's incredibly difficult to compare mid-2000s pop punk and 2010s pop punk. I think they're essentially different genres. Like Blink-182, most Green Day, Sum 41, My Chemical Romance, Yellowcard and then bands like All Time Low or We The Kings (obviously more pop than punk, but still fall under the genre, especially when people think of popular pop punk) seem entirely different to me than The Hotelier or The Wonder Years or The Menzingers, and I honestly find early 2000s so much more cringe and immature. Outside of bands like Brand New and maybe Taking Back Sunday, I don't see much to compare. But I'm also 23, so I grew up with that style when I was a lot younger and transitioned into modern pop punk in the last couple years, and just enjoy the rawness, even though I generally think of myself as a very positive person lol. And maybe I just don't know enough early-2000s pop punk, but I can't think of any band from that era that I would compare The Hotelier to

There was a good amount of early 2000s Pop Punk albums that were pretty worthwhile outside of what Brand New and Taking Back Sunday were doing. Apathy and Exhaustion, Far From Nowhere, Perhaps I Suppose, Stay What You Are, Exile In Oblivion (arguably), Is A Real Boy, Sirens and Condolences, Good Mourning, Fourty Hour Train Back to Penn, Make A Sound, Fast Forward Eats the Tape and probs more.

A lot of the "rawness" of bands like The Wonder Years were already done way better on 90s Pop Punk albums like Jerseys Best Dancers and Through Being Cool. Id actually consider Jerseys Best Dancers to be the pinnacle of Pop Punk.

Like I said too, id take the worst of 2010s Pop Punk way over the worst 2000s Pop Punk. In comparison to the latter half of the 2000s Pop Punk in general definitely went above but still is mostly just average in comparison to the best albums of the 90s and early 2000s. This album being one of the few exceptions.

Yeah that’s all fair, I should have qualified “Mainstream pop punk”. I meant to be listing off bands that were kind of the face of pop punk in the mid 2000s versus now, or at least the pop punk scene. I would take the bands now instead of the ones I listed, but I do completely admit I’m unfamiliar with most of what you listed. It’s a genre that I love what I find and is recommended most of the time, but I’m bad at seeking it out myself, if that makes sense

fuck everybody who believes this. if they really gave a shit about punk, they'd know that there's always great punk music in underground scenes all around the world even if the more prominent, celebrated bands right now are dog shit. theres so many good bands out there that arent The Wonder Years and dont have Jeff Rosenstock in them; all people gotta do is search for them and get invested in the current scenes just like they did in the old days, instead of making idiotic blanket statements cuz they're too lazy or inept to find new punk bands they can get behind.

oh so the music that everyone else is talking about right now sucks? what the fuck else is new?

I resent the accusation that the wonder years and bands including jeff make bad music and will now proceed to curl up into a ball and weep.

I'm not sad anymore, I'm just tired of your shit, dimsim3478 (jk much love)

yeah exactly, saying punk has been bad for the past 15 years is basically like the being the annoying drunk uncle who is convinced music these days isn't good and we need to go back to the 70s

i guess you dont know me but Jeff is one of my favourite musicians of all time and Suburbia by TWY was my favourite record of the 2010s. im just saying that if people dont like those bands or the trends they're a part of, there's countless great punk bands out there who are nothing like TWY and Jeff. i've always felt that a huge theme in punk has been bands making incredible, life-changing music even when the world isnt paying attention; this is obviously true of any genre, but i think any real fan of punk music understands how this theme has manifested in the history of this genre in particular and its consistency with the spirit of punk rock itself. maybe the only difference now is that the world is paying attention to some punk bands, but that doesnt mean that there arent other subversive, unknown, underground bands out there making fucking incredible music that will never be popular or famous or acclaimed but will deeply affect those who make the effort to find them and listen to them.

and re: the wonder years...

as I always say, if a band's discog has overwhelming positive reviews (or sputnik averages) and you think they're bad....chances are, you're missing something. Not everybody else. Hell I apply the same logic with myself, I've never understood why people drool over The Beatles so much but I'd never be thick enough in the skull to argue they're objectively not good. I'm just not hearing what everyone else is. If you say TWY is objectively awful, you're a dumbass. If you say they're just not your thing, that's great and more power to ya.

There's no such thing as objectivity when discussing music. Obviously, whenever someone says something sucks/rules, they tacitly imply it's their opinion. As for rating averages, you have to account for userbase bias and what not. Because by that logic, Steven Wilson is the greatest artist of all time according to sput averages. And we all know he isn't.

The Beatles aren't objectively amazing. They just happened to have the sound that has resonated with a lot of people - but that does not mean that if you don't like them, you don't get them.

right that's fair, but some people walk around like they be stating straight facts and not their opinions. that's when it gets annoying. if most everyone enjoys a style of music you don't, that's great just leave 'em be. but if you're actively trying to persuade someone out of something they enjoy, that's when you become the dumbass by trying to project your opinion as an objective truth.

Nobody was trying to persuade anyone out of anything. DBA was just stating her preferences regarding the old and new punk scenes. I agreed, because I happen to share her opinion. Or do we have to add "imo" to every fucking thing we post here now? Please.

I love it how all of the sudden people extract one sentence out of one of my posts and then this happens lol.

Saying that Punk hasnt been at its best in past while doesnt mean that im ignorant of the better stuff or that I just hate it because its new. Especially when I literally just said in the same post that the worst of the 2010s isnt as bad as the worst of the 2000s.
