true i just feel like this is the best mix of their styles and therefore their best record. i like their newer stuff too but the heavy stuff on here shits on the newer heavy stuff they do. and the prog elements don't overwhelm here imo.

This is one of those albums, that left me totally confused. It's that feeling of something exemplary good only to be found rotten inside. This album is full of good ideas, but as the whole it's a mess, with very questionable vocal performances and sporadic btbam "ambient" just for the sake of it. Let's just admit the flow here is terrible. And I really enjoy latest Automata, very mature and progressive effort compared to this mess of an album. It's strong 4 from me for that album, and its very high on rotation here. Bite me if you want, but i am also the one coming from black/death metal territory, so maybe compared to kool teen supahdeathc0r3djent4yolo this material might be head and shoulders above everyone, but in my book this is not the case.

I mean w/e but very little of what Alaska brought to the table was going around in '05. They were on the cusp of death / core previously - the growth here was immaculate. And what about the "flow" is bad? People like to say that when they don't actually have a meaningful critique. The way the two epics "flow" into the next tracks are brilliant imo, and the rest of the album feels at least as cohesive as The Great Misdirect.
Starting with Alaska, the scene would largely ape BTBAM's style nonstop for the next five years. Tommy's vocal delivery is, imo, excellent as well. The fact that a band this fucking heavy got as big as they did still blows me away.
