There are some superficial commonalities in sound but modest mouse tend to look outward as well as inward, and have a thinner, more restless and anxious tone, I mean I hear tons of built to spill and even talking heads in MM's dna. Brand new sound more chunky and thematically are far more inward focused, whatever is mixing with MM as an influence kinda ruins it. Tbf I've only made it through this album twice (it's so off putting and I didn't even know about the controversy) and a 3rd time skipping through it and that was enough for me, so maybe I'm wrong.

daisy doesn't sound like modest mouse either though, way too dark and again mental illness themes. modest mouse are more jammy and folk-ish imo. I actually think there's more Nirvana influence in Daisy than Modest Mouse influence.

I think the largest similarities to Brand New stem from LONG DRIVE, personally.

Also I hope Johnny doesn't hate me now. I was just kinda giving him shit, like I always do. I thought we had that kind of playfully argumentative dynamic.

I listened to this for the first time since probably 2015. I'm pretty sure in retrospect I gave this a 5 just because people gave it a 5 lol, I liked it musically but didn't really appreciate it. But now that I'm older, the lyrics definitely hit a lot harder. I need to just sit and listen to this while reading the lyrics sometime rather than listening to it on my runs like I've been doing recently
