any set of criteria I devise will still be intrinsically subjective because it's my own doing. I would probably use an algorithm to rate things if I could.

I'm pretty sure anyone would. You could spend more time listening to stuff you find rewarding then.

Album Rating: 5.0
This should at least be near the top. It is perfect from start to finish.

oh, I'll listen to literally anything in case I enjoy it a lot but the definition and pursuit of objectivity interests me, almost like a hobby
e; I basically agree, and the common sentiment that it is 'meandering' or 'structureless' has never made much sense to me. I've spent a lot of time listening to jazz and even classical in some cases that is more structurally nebulous than this but the appreciators of those types of music don't seem to make much fuss about it

"pursuit of objectivity"
Such a pursuit isn't likely to result in a correct answer given the variety of philosophies you could employ.
For me, objectivity is not about the rating. It's more about the approach to listening.

I think literally nothing is objective and possibly that nothing is real, but putting those thoughts into practice seems to discourage me from continuing to live; the practice of subjectively defining objectivity helps me a lot more :-)
|
| |
Subjectively defining objectivity? I'm gonna need an elaboration on that. It can be interpreted in a few ways : )
Personally, I think objectivity is an ideal that you can never reach.
|
| |
I think objectivity is a human construct like most other things and that any concrete idea of objectivity is actually based on a subjective frame of reference. I can try to appraise music or other media in a way that I think is 'objective' but those appraisals are really only determined based on a frame of reference that I or someone else personally defined, which is in itself subjective. but it's still real because we will it to be real, and having something 'real' to latch on to makes it a lot easier to navigate life and art and thoughts and feelings—at least for me
from a slightly more shallow perspective as it relates to music, I might enjoy both a three minute pop song and Bitches Brew but artistically it bothers me that there is nothing separating those in quality if everything is subjective

“I think objectivity is a human construct“
You’re objectively talking complete tripe

I have been dismantled.
