I don't get it either Drifter. I definitely thought GKMC was slightly overrated at the time of release but it was only bc it was played everywhere I went. That's an issue moreso on me though. It is easily one of the best hip hop records of the 2010s

GKMC was pretty formative in me getting back into hip hop after not really having much interest in it through high school. it was the first “modern” rap album that I was like wow this is getting radio play but it’s also way deeper than what is normally on the radio. I wonder if there’s anything else like that out there…

Its not about putting the established album down, it's about my enjoyment of his work. Gkmc is the album is return to the least outside of something like UU or OD. The narrative of the album isn't as compelling as the ones on his others even though songs like Sing About Me or maad city are some of his best. It also has songs like real, backseat freestyle, poetic justice, and Compton which are some of his weakest. Its a playlist album for me.

They'll come around. Kendrick has come so far in his career it's not really fair to keep holding up that album as his best when something like TPAB exists. I could even see this album being reexamined as his best one day.
