oh dont get me wrong i agree that lambs is being a huge clown in here

and as much as he thinks he is an aficionado he actually has a 50/50 split of extremely whack and extremely good hip hop taste

but he's mostly just butthurt about the hype for this, which he has the right to be to be honest considering how many of its advocates as a modern classic really dont know anything about the history of hip hop and jazz and somehow think this album is some kind of unique gem

but the way he's been going about it is embarrassing and insufferable

i wouldn't say any of kendricks projects are particularly unique, but they're executed very well nonetheless.

yes they are thats the thing. as much as for me personally i find him incredibly inconsistent (all 3 of his lps are almost a 50/50 split of amazing tracks and average to bad tracks for me) i still think he is a genius in a way...

but its not for being innovative, he's really not, ive said it before but ill say it again... he's genius for his ability to see where music has been and where its going, for being able to see what works and what is trending and incorporate it into his music in a way that seems ahead of its time. like this album is pretty much a combo of old and new influences from outkast to flying lotus and thundercat wrapped into a digestable package and thats genius because he see's how well people like flylo and thundercat work with hip hop and how well robert glasper does as well and he knows thats a direction people enjoy so he's taking that and combining it with an aesthetic that is tried and true (outkast) and it delivers to a very broad audience of people, hip hop fans and people who dont usually listen to the genre alike.

His song he did with flylo on you're dead! Is one of the best things he's ever done

It's alright. Gets a bit obnoxious after a while though.

The backing vocals on King Kunta just isn't a style that I could ever dig but the song is a jam

That's the thing though, I'm pretty sure most people in this thread aren't praising it because they think it's unique and innovative, more because they simply think it's really, really good, which is what renders everything Lamb's said completely pointless.

I've hardly seen anyone in this thread who's like "I've 5'd/4.5'd this because it's one of the most unique and innovative hip-hop albums ever".

agreed. bc it isn't. just something that's very very well packaged, timed, and executed.

I know I never claimed innovation, just very well executed, thanks in part to Thundercat

im not speaking for all of its advocates but i have definitely seen a tonne of people claiming this album is some kind of pinnacle of hip hop innovation and uniqueness.

agreed. bc it isn't. just something that's very very well packaged, timed, and executed.

id agree more if this album didnt have such high highs and such low lows.
