god how I wish he'd given us Casualties 2 instead of a decade of increasingly worse variations on the Addicted formula

Yeah, the new stuff is like if you combined the most annoying aspects of Addicted's catchiness with the most annoying aspects of Deconstruction's over-the-top operatic shit, lol

And at least with Addicted he still exercised some modicum of restraint so it wasn’t just 250 channels of different shit happening all at once. Walls of sound are nicer when at least some of the walls are doing the same thing.

That's one of the reasons Ghost is still my favorite Devy album. There aren't any bullshit gimmicks and production tricks that smother the whole record, so you just get a beautiful new age album that feels much more honest and personal than a lot of his over-the-top metal stuff

Addicted slaps and Epicloud is still pretty decent, if you can already tell the sound is starting to wear a little thin
Transcendence and Z2... hard pass

Epicloud is definitely where I started noticing a lot more problems in Devin's work, although in my opinion the cracks were already starting to show with how bloated Deconstruction is

Was it bloated in length or influences?

Ah. I'll be sure to keep that in mind when I eventually get around to checking it.

The entire thing is basically a huge over-the-top sensory overload. There's almost no spot on the wall-of-sound production that isn't smothered with a bunch of crazy shit, which is kind of a good and bad thing at the same time

To be fair it really sounds like the only influence Devin's taking lately is his own work from the past decade, and just throwing more and more and more useless shit into the brew

I love "Night" off here so much. seems to not be the biggest among his fans but seems to be one of his faves, as he still plays it all the time at shows. this whole album feels intimate and so lovingly crafted but that song in particular captures some kind of ethereal magic
as for the discussion re: devin's work through the years - yea I think a lot of the quality itself has broken down as he struggles to find a good shape for his sound but the sound itself has always been quintessentially "Dev" and I respect him so much for that. one of those artists that just makes straight from the heart even if it fuckin sucks
