if the argument is still that it would have pissed people off initially but developed a cult following... isn't that what basically happened regardless? just now there are more tracks for people to build their own "custom loads" with
as far as "huge initial sales" i don't think they were too worried about that after already striking mega gold with the previous album. this was their time to truly spread their arms or whatever and trying to just condense and filter that would have missed the point. same with Hardwired, though obv they actually opted to put that out as a double-album and not a split release

my argument is people would've gotten over the haircuts and the style change much faster if the album was as strong as the black album, (which it easily could've been), just like they quickly got over and accepted the black album years before
(i mean i still think load is better than the black album as is but that's nowhere near popular opinion)

Went back and played again. They really haven't changed from 1996 to now but nothing wrong with that. Load was the peak of post Metallica imo
