"just start at Souls and move forward chronologically"
I think ford has a point; I did this and I just could never dig anything beyond Through Silver In Blood. That album is so monumental that I wish they followed that sound they started with Souls At Zero and perfected with Silver in terms of atmosphere and production. Times of Grace feels so jarring to me that I have to think of everything else going forward as listening to another band because ever since they started collaborating with Albini they sound so different to me.

Disagree hard with this, having taken the same approach - SaZ is a favourite but feels very much like an outlier, and while TSiB is obviously their peak, I feel ToG and ASTNS took things in a sufficiently different direction not to feel underwhelming

Well I'm speaking hyperbole here because I do like The Eye of Every Storm very much, just because of how different it sounds, but it isn't the same to me. When I think of Neurosis I think of the trifecta that is SAZ/EOTS/TSIB.

EoES weirdly was one that never clicked hard with me, not sure why. Feel I'd enjoy it more if I came back to it now but I keep putting it off. I can kinda agree on the last part - the shock of hearing those in order for the first time was definitely my Neurosis takeaway

"EoES weirdly was one that never clicked hard with me"
Makes sense. It's the only one I kept coming back to from the Albini produced records. I think it's because it is not as dense as ASTNS and TOG, and I was able to get into the colder and drier atmosphere.

man am I the only one who thinks the second half of Altered Course goes on way too long? :/ don't get me wrong, it's still an excellent track (that first 3 minute stretch is one of the best moments on the album) but the chord change and the languid pace kinda puts me out of the album. I dunno, just my thoughts, wish they returned to the energy and melody of the first half with that track.

Panopticon was the hardest for me to get into for that song alone. I finally gave up after a long drive listening to this, and realized it was perfect. It helped that I was driving by the beach so I always think of that scenery of waves and watery sounds when listening to it. The stretch from Altered Course to the ending of Grinning Mouths is an awesome pay off as well.

ya, putting Syndic and Altered back to back creates a lot of not much going on for about fifteen minutes
|

Syndic is top 3 don't u dare

ya, but I would've put it earlier or at the end. just a minor gripe regarding album dynamics.

I definitely get what you mean, syndic is still pretty fucking amazing though, that 3rd minute is brutal, and the climax is insane. but yea coupled with altered the album does kinda go easy on ya

there's so much going on in Altered Course lol
"am I the only one who thinks the second half of Altered Course goes on way too long?"
I think that's the best part of the album

Altered State is perfect the way it is
I'm always just slightly confused by the track flow from So Did We to Backlight, given that Backlight sounds so upbeat in comparision

cmon dude say the names right

2nd best thing to me yea
but Altered Course is sublime. when it gets heavy, it still sounds as fresh as a clean glass of water.

Grinning Mouths is such a ripping final song, it makes up for whatever lack of energy there was at the end of Altered Course
