This is very different from the previous 3.
"The Czar" is easily one of the best Mastodon songs.

Out of curiosity, is it wrong to like the 2nd half of this more than the first?

Was instantly obsessed with them after hearing this for the first time.

Leviathan was the first Mastodon album I heard in full.
Band rules, or used to rule, depending on where you stand.

This was for me b/c my first exposure to them was literally right after this was released. Hunter is not their best, but still a
quality album on its own merits.

This def doesn't riff as much as the first 2, but it's a pretty cool album.
Takes a bit of effort though, if one is used to the earlier stuff.

the drummer is the best "singer" in the band
|

yeh, the vox per se aren't that special, but they do sound off at times on this.
This is one of those bands where the vox isn't really supposed to stand out on it's own.

More "enhance" the desired vibe

Exactly.

it works when you're riffing hard but not so much when you're working for whitey and trying to make commercially viable songs and records

i love all of their vocals. its not always about being a 'technically good' singer i don't get why people don't understand that
|
| |
Vox are a bit high in the mix on this.
@Emyay: agreed, it's not about being a technically good singer, but imo the great thing about early Mastodon is that you could enjoy the experience as a whole more because the vox didn't stick out. When they stick out, imo they detract from the music. However, opinions is as opinions does.

This one isn't aging well for me, think I'm gonna bump down my rating.
