Nah, early German black metal (which is still considered first wave? Idk for sure) played that style before Mayhem. Euronymous added the iciness. I would still say this is the epitome of second-wave ridding though, because of the atmosphere and more thoughtful, slower passages.

Early german BM such as who?

Let's say around the time mayhem recorded songs that would end up on this album was their start on second-wave riffs, that puts us around 1990 (when Leipzig was recorded, also when they went in the studio to record Freezing Moon and some other stuff the first time).

For what I'd consider second wave sounds, Absurd came significantly later, Nagelfar came after too, Desaster despite forming in '89 didn't release anything til '93 (and while it had tremz at times they were pretty late off the mark), Moonblood didn't release anything til '94.

If you take Poison and Sodom, sure they were blackened, but I don't think their riff style is the same as what we're talking about for the 'iconic second-wave' riffing. Poison dissolved before then anyway, they got the closest in their slower moments, but both bands were much, much more thrash-y than anything. I'd say they were very important influences on the second wave but they were not playing the second-wave style before mayhem.

Moonblood were Purulent Obduction from 90-93 and put out some demos. I'll have to check those now tho if I can find them somewhere.

True, but they weren't even blackened at that point. *Apparently anyway, looks like the earliest thing I've heard from them is their Demoniac stuff, didn't realise they had another name before that.
