such a great album. I think you have to step outside yourself a bit in terms of the whole experience of "separating art from artist" etc. almost always feel like both sides are being a bit dishonest, but the crux of it for me is that I've had such a lucky life with so little trauma (speaking for Mein Self entirely) that I feel like sort of an asshole telling other people that it is imperative that they do that

agree with both you guys, pretty much.
i think the real-life implications can add an almost contextual level of weirdness, knowing the thoughts that likely fueled the art. but i can't bring myself to denounce my enjoyment of said art on that basis alone. whether or not that makes me a shitty person, i don't know.
i can't blame others for feeling that way or writing off artists because of real life transgressions, though, because the intimacy can trigger bad thoughts for people who've suffered similar trauma. (i'm assuming - i don't know this first-hand, but i would imagine that's the case.)
however, what bothers me is that this approach is often selective. i see this often in the film community, too. people will make it their life goal to trash talk Woody Allen and advocate against everything he's ever done, yet they give straight up 5/5's to CHINATOWN and ROSEMARY'S BABY. so i'd agree that this approach is often dishonest, too. or at least narrow-minded.

yeah I simultaneously always think "well, all these artists I like could have done something terrible and I just dont know about it" and that sort of...well, it's a destabilizing thought, but for me it sort of affirms my approach. but some people might not be able to? idk

I agree with Robert on this one. I would be a hypocrite if I said I always am able to separate the art from the artist. for some reason I can still enjoy this band. ive stopped listening/watching certain people for far less serious transgressions.

I agree with separating art from the artist to the extent of listening to their music, but if you've supported the human piece of shit that is lacey financially after the allegations surfaced, you are certified scum

"I don't want to know anything about you that will humanize you"
idk if you meant to get super deep and serious but there have been many times where I have felt this way. back in the pre 2014 days when tinychat was still big I would always find it weird putting faces and voices to some of you fuckers.
