All this talk about production prompted me to listen to the new album in full. It's really not that terrible, at least not nearly as bad as California which sounded like shit.

The thing is that the music on California is way poppier, obviously the new one still poppy but they also obviously went for a lil punk/alt rock too and the production really clashes because of it

Anthem Pt 3 is so so fucking good

It could have used a bit more dirt for sure, and could do without the glossiness. Not to mention the production itself is not consistent throughout since a few of the songs have a different mix. Particularly "When We Were Young", "Fuck Face", "You Don't Know What You've Got" and maybe a couple others.
I still sustain they are better off with Travis than the Goldfinger frontman. It's a 3.0/3.5 on a good day and a 2.5 at its worst for me, which is way more than I could have hope to give this band after the last two albums. Will keep listening for sure.

"at least not nearly as bad as California which sounded like shit."
Weirdly, the gloss bothers me a lot less on California.
Maybe it's not gloss here actually. My biggest problem on this is that everything sounds really cranked up, in a bad way. Parts that should be soft sound boosted. The autotune is so obvious at times it's annoying too. Something about the way this sounds makes it hard for me to listen to for long periods of time. Like, at points the distortion will stop but the mix still feels full, and then they just keep adding more sound and it starts to feel really uncomfortable

ngl Anthem 3 and the last two are the only KEEPs on the whole thing - prod blows about as much as the lazyass choruses on every other song and bargain bin hooks
More Than You Know would be a maybe be on the save boundary though

it's a combination of a lot of things, really. I don't remember the last thing the production of a record actually distracted so much from the content itself but this one absolutely does that. i wouldn't care as much if i felt like the songs themselves were worthless but it feels like there was such a good spirit behind all of it, them putting aside so much shit just to hang out and make music again, and all to result in what is in my opinion borderline unlistenable.
talking about the new record here obviously, not the one who's thread we're currently abusing - untitled is still peak blink 4 me

Finn really was a god damn master
struck that PERFECT cord of sheen but not overly so, with fucking awesome drum, guitar, bass sounds and making Tom and Mark sounding that good without any obvious auto-tune/pitch correction trickery
RIP once more

What happened to this band? I never cared about them but with this album they were on top of the world. All the singles off this were played constantly everywhere, literally everyone jammed this. Then they just kind of imploded. It was bizarre from an outsider POV looking in. It never made sense to me, I guess Tom just went a bit nutso and it threw everything off?
