I don't know what you're getting at for sure, so let's talk straight. Are you saying clearly taking parts of songs and making new ones is fine, or that Led Zeppelin never did do that? Do you think something like "Whole Lotta Love" sounds like that Willie Dixon song "You Need Loving" or The Small Faces' version of it? If it does than it qualifies as a "rip-off." Thievery I don't know. Led Zeppelin has paid out of pocket due to claims of plagiarism, so it's not like they're proven innocent by the eyes of society. Most people back then were not aware that plagiarizing melodies or key lyrics would be treated as thievery, though.

i think taking songs that don't belong to anyone (shake em on down, jesus make up my dying bed, etc.) and

turning them into something very different (custard pie, in my time of dying, etc) isn't ripping anyone off.

the band was always very open about borrowing from earlier blues musicians (with whole lotta love being an

exception) and really saw nothing wrong with crediting "traditional songs" to themselves, as it had been

done by their predecessors. were they guilty of ripping others off? yes, but only to a certain extent.

and don't get me started on that spirit bullshit
