They play nothing from this album live. Same old shit setlist. What a drag. They barely even play anything from Damnation, either, though they have gone clean singing. Doesn't make sense. Not even 'To Bid You Farewell'? Sad state of affairs in the Opeth camp. The band is run like a product/machine, same shit every tour.

Deliverance has been the closer consistently for a decade now mostly.
Ghost of Perdition is always in there too as is Cusp and Sorceress.
Agree with Eons, their set could use a big shake up.

They totally killed it the two times I saw them. This was around the time they released Ghost Reveries and then Watershed respectively. I enjoyed them immensely.

You should read The Light of Other Days for a theory on how to accomplish that.

Johan De Farfalla's jazzy bass playing is probably why I love the early Opeth albums more than the other stuff.

It slaps, literally.

yeah, that is definitely a huge element of these records. for me it's that, the organic/authentic sound and the very complex and 'free' compositions. it's a lot easier to pin down the later records but to me that's not always a great thing.

How would you rank the band's discography, mire?
|

my personal rating criteria place Orchid, Morningrise, Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries as the top four. I'll leave it at that because a few other placements might start an argument in this thread

Ranking Opeth is like a rite of passage on dear old Sputnik, an indoctrination of sorts.

it's a bit of a bother for me because I use an 'objective' set of numbers that I try to apply to any given record free of bias. I have a second account on which I rate things purely based on my gut feeling as a sort of experiment.
I'm actually not sure which thing to answer with when I'm asked questions like this.
