On 2nd spin, I like most of this even less, with the exception of Steambreather and Roots Remain. And the two tracks I already liked. I'm honestly beyond perplexed at people who prefer this to OMRTS, as this album is more or less what I was worried that one would turn out like. I really want to like this one more though, so I'm not giving up on this yet.

I'm honestly genuinely perplexed at the lukewarm reception of this album, seems like a poppier CtS to me in a very good way plus a few new quirks. Like how can Mastodon fans dislike stuff like Scorpion Breath?

Idk this one doesn't make me think of CtS much at all. I got that feeling on one or two tracks on OMRTS, and more or less the same here. But maybe thats just because I like CtS exponentially more and this may just requires more time on my part. To me, this just feels like a less bombastic OMRTS with weaker hooks. I dont straight dislike anything here, except maybe Show Yourself, though. This will probably end up at a 3 or a 3.5 for me once it settles.

I might be crazy anyway since I don't even mind Show Yourself haha. I mean I wouldn't want an album of that, but I can get behind one pop banger. My favorite part has to be the final run from Ancient Kingdom to Jaguar God.

Ancient Kingdom is the only song I can say I love so far off this record.

After a couple more listens, Andromeda was starting to hit pretty damn hard.

[2] Hell yeah Pleb I'm listening to Andromeda as we speak. Bill's intro riff... Fuck. Could crush planets.

I don't dislike the notion of a pop banger, just find the execution rather lacking. Very bland song imo, outside of the admittedly sweet solo section. The verses are just incredibly weak. And I'm not talking on a lyrical standpoint, I just don't like his delivery at all.

Roots Remain is legit one of their best songs. Ancient Kingdom, Steambreather, Sultan’s Curse and Clandestiny are fucking fantastic as well. Clandestiny is really underrated. Never see it mentioned.

Show Yourself is fun. Just feels a little out of place, no big deal though. The video is fucking hysterical.

Alright I gave this a couple more listens this morning at work. A lot of this actually grew on me a bit. The only song I just do not like is Show Yourself. Half of the tracklist lands at a 3.5 for me. Roots Remain, Ancient Kingdom, and Jaguar God swing above that mark. The first three songs land below.

I really love ~2:00 onwards into Precious Stones, it sounds very uplifting to me.

And yeah Clandestiny deserves some love, that trippy section is great.

This has definitely gotten better over time. I put this on before The Hunter or Once more 'round the sun these days.
