i know lars gets a lot of shit, because he is just about a whole parking lot's worth of shit. Yet i can't help but think that metallica's wide-ranging appeal was due in part of his amenable, barebones drumming framework that the band's music is built around. His playing is pressed and corrugated into fine head-bobbing rhythms and tasteful fills all over their best albums, so that there's space in the mix for the rest of the band to flourish and for the novice ear to breathe. Metallica is kind of irreplaceable in metal for that reason, where the overarching instrumental talent is corralled by the drummer's lack of ability to its own benefit and detriment.

I will give Lars credit for being well connected, and a smart business mind, which obviously helped launch the band. Without him, they may have never made it.

Lars' simple yet powerful drumming propelled Metallica to heights they wouldn't have achieved with a more skilled drummer. The simple, driving beats keep this super accessible even to those who aren't musically inclined. His playing emphasizes the riffs- which is really what made Metallica great.

i agree... but you can't believe that was a conscious decision that Lars did that on purpose...
it just HAPPENS that Lars playing level being interchangeable with Meg White kept this more accessible.

"Lars' simple yet powerful drumming propelled Metallica to heights they wouldn't have achieved with a more skilled drummer. "
Holy shit, that's the first time I have ever heard that opinion. Glad someone likes him, but to each their own. I think he is the main thing holding them back which is especially apparent on Justice when he is louder than fucking everyone.

I think his inexperience works for and against him. He does a lot of stuff normal drummers wouldn't do or think to do because they were "classically" trained or practiced. Lars just fucking banged stuff until he found a beat. It works on their earlier stuff, and makes his fills more exciting and impactful. But then you have stuff like St. Anger where it completely backfires.

"In my opinion he just flat out objectively sucks"
Yah agreed, I don't even find his passionate fills interesting - just juvinille, especially when he's accompanied by an actually fucking amazing bassist (Newsted as well) and guitar riffs that fucking rule

He helped write these songs. His drumming was never a problem until it became a lazy meme.
OK, his ...less than complicated personality has not helped him. But that's drummers for you. You want them to stay in the back and not say anything.
