this is the better "album" but Section 80 has most of my favourite tracks of his. HiiiPower, Fuck your Ethnicity, Rigamortis, Poe Man's Dreams, A.D.H.D., Hol' Up, No Makeup..... no makeup is awful but agreed in general. section.80 goes harder but the narrative construction and storytelling on this one make it the better artistic statement. nothing on here is as good as the standouts from s.80

precisely. hiiipower, hol' up, etc. are too good.
this has kill my vibe money trees and that's about it for single tracks that are awesome.

when i listen to the whole thing i feel like it's good as a statement but when i'm actually listening it's not that cool. this one is also more jesusy and that's never a positive.

sherane, compton, swimming pools, money trees, good kid / maad city and backseat freestyle are all bangers imo
oh and art of peer pressure
and yeah, the religious bs that pops up towards the end of the album (and the fact that Real is not a very good track) kinda brings the album down

i am a staunch atheist, but the theme of overcoming negativity through self-acceptance and persevering in the pursuit of a greater cause is universal, and this album is still a beautiful example of that. kendrick is eloquent and the story is very good. i like this album for what it is, but i only get so much out of the individual songs as pieces on their own terms if that makes sense.

I actually love Real except for that hook. That hook is balls. But the skits and the verses are uplifting and positive and I love that.
And the religious aspect is handled much more gracefully on this album than it is on most, considering most rappers who talk about it will mention the hypocrisy of being thugs and God-fearers but never give the impression of being interested in, perhaps, changing that.

yeah most of my friends are atheists but are also huge music fans and they always have the same reaction to religion in songs- they tweak out a bit. i mean i understand it because sometimes it get preachy, but if you think about most music, from a lyrical standpoint, is always preaching something obviously. so people who choose to complain about religion when they hear it in music really just sound hypocritical to me, but once again in this situation, i understand because the song isn't good. but i was saying the theme is universal regardless of whether or not your self-acceptance comes from a place of religion or from elsewhere. i am not a believer but that doesn't at all detract from the power of the story on this album for me. in the end the message is still that you should love yourself, and that is the truth.

i guess i was being a little harsh there. it's at odds with my worldview but obv it isn't a dealbreaker for me, still a fan.
