its a fun thought experiment to think about how their career might've ended up differently
like if they just released a 45-60min album of the most undeniable material between the two albums could they have had another black album on their hands?? extend their "prime" from just the 80s to '80s and 90s'?? people hated these albums so much for the longest time yet they are still like 4x platinum a piece
if people didn't hate them do they even bother with the "back to our roots" direction of their 00s material??

tbh I'm not sure it would have made such a huge difference, wasn't the uproar at the time more about their general change and direction/image than the actual full tracklists of each record?

Yeah wouldn't change the math on them having three-ish albums' worth of ideas in the 80s and barely one album's worth in the 90s

i think it would've received a ton of hate from metalheads anyways because they "cut thare hair" but over time, a singular condensed Load/Reload no more than 60 minutes would've developed a very strong following. critically i think the album would've done much better and it would had tons of hit. "fuel" "king nothing" "until it sleeps" "memory remains" "bleeding me" all on the same album would've hit about as hard as The Black Album sales-wise, at least in terms of initial charting success.

yeah exactly like it'd have been more similar to the black album reaction: people mad at first (maybe a little more mad this time) but the album would be undeniable enough that most people get over it.
fuel, memory remains, until it sleeps, unforgiven ii, and king nothing all on one focused album is not all that different from the black album's sandman, sad but true, unforgiven, roam, nothing else matters collection... but all those songs being split between two 80 minute albums with a lot of inconsequential filler makes the actual good stuff not nearly as effective.
these albums had a very high floor sales-wise by virtue of following the black album... but they also had a ceiling probably like 80% as high as the black album and didn't really get close (even if you combine the sales of both albums its still only like halfway, but that's not really how it works).

like even completely disregarding what actually is the best material of the two albums... if they tried to just completely recreate the black album template (like they did with ride on master & justice) the album would look something like:
1. king nothing (sandman)
2. the memory remains (sad but true)
3. aint my bitch (hoiler than thou)
4. hero of a day (unforgiven)
5. until it sleeps (roam)
6. 2 x 4 (don't tread on me)
7. wasting my hate (through the never)
8. unforgiven ii (nothing else matters)
9. bad seed (wolf)
10. devil's dance (god that failed)
11. bleeding me (my friend of misery)
12. fuel (struggle within)
this tracklist probably at the very least goes over better critically and probably sells more than either actual album, and this doesn't even include the actual most interesting material like outlaw, fixxxer, low man's lyric etc.
