Metal died in 1993. Only 12 good albums have been released since then (most of them in 1994, being already recorded by 1993). Metal achieved its creative peak in albums like Onward to Golgotha, Pure Holocaust, and The Red in the Sky is Ours, elevating the genre into a legitimate art form. Now, thanks to Slaughter of the Soul and Gojira, all its potential was squandered and the genre has been reduced into being mere gimmick ridden noise for drunk idiots (i.e. the lowest common denominator - stop trying to turn underground metal into AC/DC).

Sorry, just had to take advantage of the opportunity

There are certain albums that have revolutionized and created whole genres of music. These range from Myles Davis’ Bitches Brew to Korn’s self titled album to Led Zeppelin’s debut, and all of these albums have had a great influence on music. This is one of those albums. Slaughter of the Soul is the crown jewel of the heaviest of the three Gothenburg titans (At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity and In Flames). What essentially happened with this album is that At the Gates took the more melodic approach of its predecessor, Terminal Spirit Disease, simplified it and added more ferocity and brutality. The result is a masterpiece. Without this album, there would be not Killswitch Engage, no As I Lay Dying or no All That Remains.

It's less sterile, more natural and raw especially in Thomas' vocals, while still retaining the melodic sensibilities that make this great

The production on there is pretty horrible though (not that these dudes have ever had good production)

To Drink From the Night Itself strangely became my favorite by them, and this I almost never relisten for some reason

I don't recall where I read it but it was a review of this album that basically said this was "metal with all the interesting parts hacked off". I'd say that about summarizes my feelings. It's a lot like Agent Orange or Coma of Souls in that respect.
