@park: no to funeral mist, yes to post-2000 mayhem. i will check funeral mist out.

I guess my point is, is this still then considered solely “black metal”? And if so, at what point does the sound separate from its roots enough to be considered something else entirely?

Or am I just wrong? I mean, like I said - I hear this and definitely think “black metal” to myself. But at the same time, it sounds so far from black metal roots at times that only one genre tag is definitely selling it short. But i can’t figure out how to best describe those other influences, because none of those labels feel exactly right, either.

This is part of why i love this album so much. On one hand it feels familiar and accessible, on the other hand there’s nothing else exactly like it.

Also given the etymology, i would think the “Orthodox” BM tag would be retroactively fitted unto the transitional BM, like Burzum and Mayhem etc., or actually calling this “Unorthodox” BM seems more appropriate. But i don’t really like the sound of either of this tbh lol.

Woah this has a 4.3 average now, cool.

Check ‘Fas, Ite‘ tect, it’s even better imo.

I thought this came under the ‘disso-black’ umbrella, which is admittedly a pretty crappy descriptor and I’m not particularly well-versed in those influences.

ya disso- anything is a good meme

Fas might be better than this, but Kenose might be their best. I have changed my mind on the ranking of dso many times.

Its just black metal dont worry about it.

Black metal has taken on many heads and evolved

TRVE black metallers hate anything that doesnt sound like it was played through a 3rd hand cassette recorder but its black metal with many influences too.

@ghandi Drought too. I mean anything post Fas is utterly tremendous really

Was just jamming this last night and realized that this is the greatest blackened death metal band ever. Next to the new Ad Nauseaum album, nothing even comes close to these guys.

Early dso is def more full on trve bm than any of latter works. I lay with deez on this.

Experimental avant-garde dissonant blackened death metal is more accurate

love those insane screams that come out occasionally on track like Phosphene or Wings of Predation, it sounds like he's being tortured, crazy shit. Awesome. So much conviction in this band, that's I think what you get from the band maybe more than anything else. Intensity. Listening to the albums is like an experience itself. More than just listening to music, it's almost like cinematic, and you go along wherever the narrative takes you.

Some of those bellows in Abscission are just insane. And the fucking blast beats holy shit.
So yes, @Demon: FAS was awesome. Need to listen a few more times to solidify a rating but right now it’s hovering around second for me, behind this. This is still my favorite.
I also thought FURNACES was really really good and somewhat overlooked back in 2019. Still jam that somewhat regularly.

yeah avant garde is a pretty broad term but I think calling DsO Avant-garde black metal is a pretty good description. At least as far as their post 2004 output goes

I’ve never even heard their first two records.

Yeah they are very uninspired. Inquisitors of Satan isn't a complete bore like Infernal Battles is, but dso really begin with Si monvmentvm.
