Boxer is great but can't touch this. Nothing else they've done comes close to those two imo.

Musically I'm a layers kind of guy, and this and their last two are just so layered

Boxer feels empty to me in parts

i get what you mean to an extent

wouldn't call this overly layered, the production doesn't really cater to that sort of fine tuning and subtlety but agreed about HV and trouble

boxer is indeed more stripped back i guess but to me it's so warm and lush and smoky and basically a glass of fine scotch in audio form

interested what your fav album of theirs is for drumming? bryan is a wizard

This easily. He does so many subtle amazing things on here, the drumming on High Violet rules as well. The one issue I have with TWFM is the drumming, it's literally either a drum machine or the same beat in every single song.

That said, my favorite National song drumming-wise is Brainy. That beat is ridiculous.

high violet drumming is indeed sweet

love boxer's drumming so hard too on basically every song

didn't really pick up so much of what he's doin here it sounds more simplistic to me, maybe cos the rougher production can occasionally obscure this or that

sometimes i wish it sounded cleaner like the others but then a song like abel will punch me in the face and remind me that this is perfect

fuck it time to 5

YES

Dude the first 3 tracks, All The Wine and Geese have absolutely incredible drumming. Bryan is the master of tempo. Also who could forget Mr. November, Abel, City Middle, basically the whole album except Val Jester
