Loving Kveikur, the idea of no drums isn't encouraging me to check out

This and Kveikur are my fave SR and for completely different reasons.

I mean, their drummer left the band. I didn't expect them to continue the heavier approach on Kveikur, even though I would have loved it

Only got a few songs in to the new album this morning; I'd love to sit down and hear the entire thing instead of through fragmented experiences, as I feel that's ideal for Sigur Ros. What I heard so far was breathtaking; like Valtari, sure, but IMO prettier. We'll see what the rest of the songs bring.

Why tf would you listen to an Opeth album in intermittent chunks besides not actually enjoying Opeth and not being able to get through it

Same for meshuggah

every single Opeth album is 5-7 iterations of exactly the same song with the occasional folk-goth ballad thrown in for damage control

and that song will consist of 5-10 riffs repeated ad infinitum for at least 1 minute each with the occasional folk-goth interlude thrown in for damage control

there are worse formulas but jfc a whole album is guaranteed burnout. opeth do rip in small doses though, very easy band to return to for nostalgia purposes "oh wow the blackwater part t/t still rips nice that's all bases covered i'm done"

And even if by some reasoning that is the favoured method, how is it the ideal method? Unless an album (or movie or anything like that for that matter) is specifically made to be listened to in chunks I can’t see how interrupting the intended flow by hours/days could ever be the ideal way to experience it as intended

The few times I’ve listened to any Opeth in recent years has been in small chunks. I like them, but if i get an itch for something else while I’m listening to them, I’m changing it and i might pick up where i left off later

@johnny so because you don’t actually like Opeth that much, meaning that way is ideal for you but not ideal in general which is what I’m inquiring about

"I can’t see how interrupting the intended flow by hours/days could ever be the ideal way to experience it as intended"

that reasoning puts too faith in the artist; think the Ideal Experience is gonna lie at least slightly outside their intentions more often than not (for sit-down listening anyway, different matter for dance stuff)

if we're talking about albums that were conceivably specifically designed to pay dividends if heard in separate or even random chunks, then AMSP most defs, HTTT q possibly, and Soundtracks for the Blind if that's something you care about

If an album is put together like amsp (a bunch of random old songs with absolutely no consideration whatsoever for flow or cohesion) then that’s fair game

But I think any album that has been made with the intent of being a contained experience (most albums ever) the ideal way to listen is from front to back obviously

If you can’t listen to bull of heaven front to back you’re just a coward
Listen to all 789 billion years in sequence as intended
