Damn I'm really falling for this album now despite feeling moderarely underwhelmed at first.

Listened to this and Pyg back to back - still can't bump this above a 3.5, Pyg is still incredible. I was never a huge fan of shoegaze so I like the surgical removal of the 'swirly pretty dreaminess' on Pyg. If someone 5's 'Loveless' then I guess you 5 this too (or 4.5 it as Loveless is the heroin version of this)

'Alison', 'Machine Gun', 'Here She Comes', 'When the Sun Hits' and 'Dagger' earn the 3.5

Pygmalion is growing on me but I still don't really love it as a whole, it's just a bit too fractured for me though it is probably technically a "better" or at least more interesting album. I dig the shoegaze thing a lot, though this and Loveless are so different that I wouldn't really say enjoying one indicates one would enjoy the other.

They both have that 90s ('89-94) shoegaze vibe that I find very particular, I guess Slowdive have that fey jangle thing in the mix like early Red House Painters and Field Mice too. It's objectively a good combination but it's just not my favourite sound. 'I Could Live in Hope', 'Laughing Stock', 'Pygmalion' (and to some extent Red House Painters) all have that more stripped back thing and I just find myself drawn to that way more.

I wouldn't necessarily say 'Pyg' is a better album in any sort of objective way, I can definitely see how someone could accuse it of being too one note and lifeless. I just love the way it pulls off being largely one note and a bit lifeless :D

Normally I enjoy that stripped down thing more and Laughing Stock is certainly the best of those albums you mention but I find the layered shoegaze sound very appealing as well when I'm in the right mood. Pygmalion will probably click more fully with me eventually but for now I'm definitely in more of a shoegaze mood.

I get very different vibes from Slowdive and MBV though, they're almost opposite manifestations of shoegaze with Slowdive being way more dream pop while MBV is way more noise pop.

Yeah I can see that. MBV is more shoegaze and Slowdive is more dream pop. One could say I’m splitting hairs but a lot of modern shoegaze tends to pull inspiration from MBV. This album has its noisy tendencies but for the most part it’s very smooth and ethereal. There’s definitely a reason why this is considered more accessible shoegaze. This album is pretty sinusoidal and Loveless more angular. There are fewer harsh distortions. Loveless can sound like a buzzsaw going over wood while admiring a beautiful woman, but this is more like a kiss from an angel. They’re both derived from psychedelic pop and both have the characteristic wall of sound but are kinda different branches. I think a lot of their categorization has to do with them both being rock bands from the 80’s and 90’s who channel the wall of sound sound during that time period. If they were both released today, I think they wouldn’t be lumped together. I mean we can see how different m b v and Slowdive (the album) are.

There are lots of amazing songs here but "Shine" from the Holding Our Breath EP may be my favorite Slowdive song, was jamming it last night and it's just blissful
