The 3 minute "outro" of yield to naught is unbelievable

This band has been flawless since The Destroyers of All but yeah that climax on Yield is utterly breathtaking.

I can very much appreciate the artistry and musicianship on this record, but damn do I get bored during some of the tracks

most of the un engaging material is loaded at the front, bow to spite to the end is like peak of death metal in the 21st century imo, or close to it

Yea I'm still going through my 2016 records before I make an in depth 2016 review (so much to get through no way I could've done it by Dec/Jan, too much stuff to check out and re listen to) so I'll definitely give this a few more listens before I sit on a certain rating.

Idk how anyone could find them unengaging. Theyre one of those bands whose music only benefits from you getting to know it well through repeated listens. If its boring its probably because you haven't listened close enough.

"If its boring its probably because you haven't listened close enough." Don't think you meant to sound this way, but holy fuck that's one of the most pretentious thing's I've read in a while.

I have Audio Technica MH50's at work and Sennheisers at my house, listening with quality cans is never an issue, guess it's just been a while since I've been on a heavy Death Metal kick and the technical stuff will take a while for my ear to appreciate. Like I said, technically speaking the records superb, I just can't find any memorable melodies or instances that either stick in my head or just become repetitive in my mind, bogged down by some very extensive atmospheric parts that just seem to mesh together. I'm sure this record will grow on me, just didn't really jump out at me on the first few listens and became grating over an album, although I'll agree, the last few tracks far outweigh the beginning.

that's fair. this style of dm takes a while to click for me too. think I had this pegged at a 3 on my first listen feeling similar as you. not big on the first half still, but love the second. chasm of fire jumped into my top 3 ulcerate songs with cold becoming and everything is fire.

I don't know man when Ive listened to an ulcerate record the first few times there wasn't anything specific that caught my attention or stuck with me. I just kinda got lost in calm/chaotic atmosphere that only they can produce. With each listen I started noticing different things going on within a given track. Even now, there aren't a ton of songs in their catalog that I'd be able to recognize right off the bat.

its all about composition and the development of ideas, not memorable melodies
